Avoid Bug Bites with Skin So Soft Bug Guard

Picaridin: The new champion?
Created by Bayer in the 1980s, picaridin (pronounced pih-CARE-a-den) is a synthetic compound developed from a plant extract from the genus Piper, the same plant genus that produces table pepper. Picaridin has been available since 1998 in Europe and Australia—where it is the best-selling insect repellent—but was approved for sale in the United States only in 2005. (You may see it listed as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, or icaridin.) As with DEET, the EPA has concluded that the normal use of picaridin does not present a health concern.
Studies have shown picaridin to be as effective as DEET in repelling mosquitoes. Unlike DEET, however, picaridin is odorless, non-greasy, and does not dissolve plastics or other synthetics. The one possible concern with picaridin is its relative newness. Insufficient time has passed for long-term health risks (should they exist) to manifest themselves. A limited, but growing, number of repellents contain picaridin, including Cutter Advanced, Sawyer Premium, and Repel Smart Spray. (read more)

Picaridin: Picaridin has been widely used in other parts of the world, and has been available in the U.S. in a variety of brands since 2005. Structurally based on chemicals in pepper, it appears to interfere with the mosquito’s ability to smell its prey. The chemical is extremely effective for some species of mosquito (including important disease-carrying mosquitoes such as A. aegypti), but is less effective for other species that don’t appear to rely on smell, so overall it may be somewhat less effective than DEET. A 20% Picaridin formulation has been shown to repel mosquitoes for 8-10 hours.
Picaridin is much less irritating to the skin than DEET, so it might be a better choice for people with sensitive skin. It has very low toxicity and does not appear to cause adverse neurological or reproductive effects. Nor does it cause cancer in animals. It also lacks the unpleasant odor of DEET. (read more)

IR3535. IR3535 has a fancy chemical name, 3-[N-Butyl-N-acetyl]-aminopropionic acid, ethyl ester, but it’s really just a synthetic amino acid that, like other repellents, interferes with mosquitoes’ ability to sniff you out as a hearty meal. The health risks of IR3535 are minimal to nonexistent, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), though there have been reports of eye irritation. A bonus: IR3535 doesn’t have the same stench of other ingredients.
Hours of Protection: 4-8 for products containing 10 – 30 percent IR3535.
IR3535 Products: Coleman Skin Smart (20%), Avon Skin-So-Soft™ Bug Guard Plus IR3535 Active Insect Repellent (7.5%) and Skin-So-Soft™ Bug Guard Plus IR3535 Expedition Insect Repellent (15-20%).Picaridin. Picaridin both repels and deters insects, keeping them from feeding on a tasty human host. Researchers aren’t clear on how picaridin works, but according to Melissa Piliang, M.D., dermatologist at Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio, picaridin interferes with insects’ ability to sense carbon dioxide (a.k.a. human prey).” Studies show picaridin evaporates from the skin more slowly than DEET or IR3535, repelling insects for longer periods of time. It doesn’t seem to irritate the eyes or skin, and there are no concerns of neurotoxicity as there are with DEET.
Hours of Protection: 8-14 hours for products containing 20 percent picaridin and 3.5-8 for products containing 10 percent.
